6 SIGNS YOUR CHILD MAY BE A VICTIM OF BULLYING

“If there are no heroes to save you, then you be the hero.” – Denpa Kyoshi

Only a startling small percentage of children report bullying to an adult.  More than 70% of bullied kids stay silent.  So how will you know if your kid is one of them?

In recent news stories, we’ve heard about children going as far as suicide to escape torment. And while this isn’t the norm, it’s enough to make parents think.

So here are the facts that can help parents decide if their child is being bullied.

Clemson University pioneered a large research study on bullying. They found 22% of third grade students are bullied 2-3 times a month or more. 17% of seventh graders face the same problems.  It doesn’t matter if your child is a boy or a girl. They both run the risk of being bullied equally, with girls trending slightly higher.

So if it doesn’t matter the age or gender, what can parents do?  Moms and dads, look for the following signs your kid may be a victim of bullying.

  • They have few friends
  • They have unexplained injuries from school or self harm
  • They are depressed and / or anxious
  • They don’t want to go to school
  • They have a change in appetite
  • They don’t want to go to the bathroom at school

If your kid displays these signs, it’s not necessarily that they are being bullied. But can you afford to sit it out? If you suspect bullying please check out the National Bullying Prevention Center at http://www.pacer.org/bullying/resources/
