Today, we’re going to learn how to do a “Quick Switch”. Before we learn how to do that, I want to emphasize how important low kicks are.
Not everybody understands the effectiveness of a low kick. It can be very damaging. It is a fight stopper. It has a certain cumulative effect. When you start banging your shin into the guy’s thigh over and over again, he can’t stand anymore. And if he can’t stand, he can’t fight.
How To Use The Quick Switch Low Kick For Self-Defense
If you’ve got your left leg in front and I’ve got my left leg in front, you’re gonna be using your right leg and take out my lead leg. That’s obvious. You can take your back leg and take out my lead leg.
But what if you’ve got your left leg in front and I’ve got my right leg in front? You may try your right leg. But that may not be that effective. It’s better if you could hit the outside of his right leg with your left leg – the lead leg. How do you do that? How would you kick with a low kick when your leg is in front?
The Quick Switch
With the quick switch move, you should switch your feet quickly. All you need to do is to switch your feet and then kick.
Let’s say, I’ve got my right leg in front and you’ve got your left leg in front. Now I can’t kick the side of your left leg with my right leg. So, what I do is I switch my feet. Once I switch, now I’ve got my left leg in front and I can kick the side of your left leg with my right leg.
You can break it down into two steps – switch and kick. That’s fine for the beginning. But what you want to do is shorten that interval as you get better. Make the “quick switch” quick. So, after you get the basic coordination down, you should pick the speed up of the quick switch.
Body Mechanics Are Same As The Right Kick
And, the kick itself is the same. It’s the same body mechanics as we did on the right kick – one hand up, one hand back, body turns, foot pivots all these stuffs. So, that is the lead leg low kick.
