Today, we are going to work on the low kicks and learn how to develop coordination for kicking in self defense.

Why Coordination is Key

In streetlight your opponent will give you enough opportunities for you to use kicks that will decide the winner of the fight. You may use a low kick or a groin shot anytime he leaves his legs open for a kick.

Let’s say, the low kick to the thigh is wide open. Or, let’s say, the groin shot is wide open. It’s an opportunity for you to launch devastating attack without putting yourself in serious risk of taking any serious punching damage. So, kicking is a good choice. Therefore, it’s really important to practice coordination drills for kicking in self defense.

Coordination Drills for Pendulum Groin Kick

I’ve got my partner Angeloes to practice low kick coordination. Let’s say, he has got a left lead stance. And, I am going to work on the pendulum groin kick where I slide up and kick the groin with my lead leg.

Although I am going to kick for the sack of working with my partner, I’m going to kick inside of his thigh with my instep. In real fight, you may go straight up into the groin. But for practice’s sack, I’m just going to tap his inner thigh. He can do it back to me. So, we are just going to tap back and forth. This is great coordination drill for both of us. I tap him, he taps me.

Coordination Drills for Rear Leg Kick

Now, I’m going to add in the rear leg kick. Again, for the sack of practicing with my partner, I’m going to kick the back inner thigh. So, I kick him, and he kicks me. This is also a great coordination drill for kicking in self defense.

Coordination Drills For Low Kick

Now, we are going to work on the low kick itself. On this one as well, you have to kick softly. After all, you don’t want to kick your partner hard. So, just tap your shin on his thigh with your low kick. I kick him, he kicks me. It’s a great way for both me and my partner to train and practice at the same time.

Mixing Up Everything

What we do next is we mix all the techniques we learned in this lesson and move around. We may take any of the three shots- I may do the pendulum groin kick or the rear leg groin kick or the low kick itself. He will also do it back to me. We are just going to trade one for one. Once you are comfortable with it, just move around and practice. This is one of the best drills you can do for kicking self defense.

There isn’t really anything better when you develop your low line kicking skill like this -practicing with your partner and working out the distance and coordination.

Summary: Things We Learned

To summarize, the following steps are important coordination drills for kicking in self defense:

  1. Try different kicking techniques and practice with your partner. You tap him, he taps you – just like this.
  2. Once you are done practicing specific kicking techniques, mix them up and move around.
