Today, we’re going to get into one of the trademark chokes of Jiu Jitsu. It’s the triangle choke for the bottom. It’s a very strong choke. Lot of guys, lot of fights have ended because of this choke. So, it’s very effective. Definitely it’s one you should add to your arsenal.

How To Do A Simple Triangle Choke In Jiu Jitsu

This is how it works. Basically, the triangle choke is a choke with your legs. It’s a way to choke a guy out from the bottom with your legs.

Get A Triangle Position

We’re gonna start right now from what we call the triangle set up position. We’re gonna learn about how to get here in a minute. But just for the sake of the technique right now we’re gonna start from one leg being up on the shoulder and crossing your feet. This is the triangle set up position. So, when you start with your partner, just put one leg, put one of his arms underneath your leg and just cross your feet.

Position for a Triangle Choke

Step One: Push His Arm Across His Face

This is how we finish the choke from here. Once you get the triangle position, the first step is to pass one of his arms and push it across his face and take the same side hand and confirm the grip.

Push his arm right across his face

Step Two: Hold His Head

Step two is to hold his head and once you get his head, release the grip and put the foot on his hip. I don’t want to release the grip early as it may leave the door open for him to escape the choke. What you do next is to take your calf and bite right across the back of his neck. Not on his back, you are gonna bite horizontally across the back of his neck. Then you can grab your foot there to kind of confirm that. Leave a little bit of stab so that you can pass your other leg over there. Now, I’ve got the triangle position and I can now finish the choke.

Hold his head

Step Three: Finish The Choke

To finish the choke, you want to squeeze your knees together as you pull his head as you lift the hips. So, it’s knees together, head pull and hip lift and that’s the triangle choke. Just make it sure that he doesn’t get any chance to get away. Follow all the steps and I mentioned and practice these a lot. The more you practice the more you get used to it.

Finish the choke

Summary: Things We Learned

To summarize, the triangle choke is a very effective choke in Jiu Jitsu. Practice this sequence over and over. You can practice this at home. You can practice this on a pillow or whatever. Following are the synopsis of this triangle choke:
