What Is Jiu Jitsu?

Bam Bam Jiu Jitsu Houston - Beggining and Advanced Jiu Jitsu Classes
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling based martial art that focuses on takedowns, groundwork, holding, pins, submissions.

Jiu Jitsu (also known as “Brazilian Jiu Jitsu” or just “BJJ” for short) is a martial art which has proven itself effective time and time again through the crucible of live combat. Jiu jitsu evolved from the battlefield fighting style of the Samurai and was adopted by the Gracie family in the earliest 20th century into real-world fighting system which focuses on strategy, leverage, and positioning rather than size or strength to overcome an attacker.

While jiu jitsu incorporates and trains striking techniques and stand-up grappling, its brilliance is in its unparalleled ground fighting strategy. Jiu jitsu is a GRAPPLING BASED MARTIAL ART where the focus is placed on takedowns, groundwork, and submissions.

Today, jiu jitsu is widely regarded as the most effective fighting style for just about anyone. This has been proven time and again through mixed martial arts tournaments and real-world self-defense scenarios.

Moreover, jiu jitsu is also one of the fastest growing martial arts in the world and the reason why is because there are a number of benefits that come from training in this style of martial art.

So in this article, I’m going to tell you about some of the top benefits that come from learning jiu jitsu.

Jiu Jitsu Is The Single Most Important Martial Art To Learn For Self-Defense

Of course, when we are talking about martial arts benefits, the first thing people think typically about is self-defense, and that is an important consideration.

If you want to know why jiu jitsu is indisputably the best martial art then let history speak for itself. Just do a search on YouTube and you will see that in a fight between a jiu jitsu practitioner and a fighter from any other system, jiu jitsu almost always wins. While devastating, jiu jitsu students also learn how to safely and gently terminate a dangerous confrontation when great force is uncalled for.

Now naturally, no sensible person wants to get involved in a real self-defense altercation, and peaceful law-abiding people don’t go around looking for fights. But the fact is that you don’t always have that choice. You may not pick fights but sometimes the fight picks you.

Most martial arts and most martial arts schools train static drills against a relatively compliant opponent. One of the key areas of superiority in jiu jitsu is the fact that all of the techniques are PROVEN to work against ACTIVE RESISTANCE of BIGGER and STRONGER opponents. This active resistance is a part of almost every jiu jitsu class and nothing makes a person a more effective martial artist faster than testing your techniques against a person who isn’t just going to comply to your wishes.

Jiu jitsu is always on the hunt for ways to improve the system and is responsive to the needs of self-defense in modern life. It’s focus on strategy over strength, positioning over bull-rushing, and leverage over size can enable even a small person to effectively take down a bad guy by neutralizing their punches and kicks, taking the attacker to the ground, and bringing a swift and safe end to the altercation through the POWERFUL and effective use of pins, chokes, and submission holds.

So an important thing you need to know is that martial arts are NOT all equal when it comes to self-defense. Some are better than others. Some arts focus on striking. Other martial arts focus on weapons. They all have different strengths and areas of focus. They have different benefits to offer.

However, all things being equal, if you are ever forced to defend yourself against a larger and stronger attacker who is trying to really hurt you, jiu jitsu is the martial art you need to know and there are several reasons why.

Bam Bam Jiu Jitsu Houston - The Gi Choke
Jiu jitsu is scientific in the sense that you learn a move and you can SAFELY test it out against an opponent who is resisting 100%. Jiu jitsu has been developing in this kind of a “lab” for a long time and so is every effective for this reason.

Reason #1: Jiu jitsu really works!

Jiu jitsu has been battle tested. There is no mere theory or guess work here. When you are learning jiu jitsu moves you are learning techniques that have been proven to work, time and time again, on resisting opponents That’s the beauty of a grappling based martial art like jiu jitsu.

In fact, you can say that jiu jitsu is scientific in the sense that you learn a move and you can SAFELY test it out against an opponent who is resisting 100%. That’s what happens in every jiu jitsu class. You learn some moves, and then apply those moves to your partner who not only knows what you are going to do but is also trying to stop you from doing that move. So jiu jitsu has been developing in this kind of a “lab” for a long time and so is every effective for this reason.

For this reason you never have to wonder “if” your martial art will work against a resisting opponent, rather, you KNOW it will because you have successfully used it on the mats at your school.

You can see this for yourself in a safe way. The first time you step on the mat at a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy you will immediately be aware of how little the average person knows about basic self-defense and the ineffectiveness of our basic instincts.

Reason #2: Jiu Jitsu specializes in ground grappling which is the critical area for most fights.

Real fights are not like the movies. When fights really happen on the street, they usually end up on the ground, whether you want them to or not. This is true not only when it’s a man attacking another man but it is especially true if it is a man is attacking a woman.

It is really a common misconception that striking will win out when two people get into a real fight, but in actual altercations, punching is not nearly as effective as closing the distance, getting a clinch, and taking your opponent to the ground.

But when you know jiu jitsu it is really easy to beat someone on the ground. Anyone who has trained in jiu jitsu for a long time knows that rolling with a guy who’s brand new, is very often just incredibly easy. It’s almost a joke how easy it is to beat them.

So with jiu jitsu you are mastering the art of ground fighting which is the most common range of real fights. As one famous jiu jitsu teacher put it, when you know jiu jitsu, you are a shark, the ground is your ocean, and most people don’t know how to swim.

Reason #3: Jiu jitsu teaches a proven four-step strategy for defending yourself against larger attackers

Step 1 Distance Management: When you are confronted by an attacker we teach students to keep a safe two arm’s length distance from an attacker so that you are far enough away to avoid his dangerous punches and yet remain close enough to take him down when the opportunity presents itself.

Step 2 Take Him Down: Next, the goal is to get the attacker to the ground. Why? Because when we do this we take away his power base. Human explosive power is grounded in the legs. (Imagine a boxer trying to punch when on their knees). They aren’t nearly as effective there and the reason why is because when they are on the ground the explosive power of the legs has been taken away. Once you take away an attackers legs like this their ability to hurt you has dramatically decreased.

Step 3 Establish A Dominant Position: Next, we teach the jiu jitsu student to get past the bad guy’s dangerous legs to establish and maintain a dominant position (like a mount or “back mount“). From this position, the attacker cannot hurt you but you can attack them. This is a MUCH MORE INTELLIGENT way of defending yourself than just standing there going “toe to toe” and trying to duke it out with someone who is bigger or stronger than you are.

Step 4 End The Conflict With A Submission: Next in jiu jitsu we teach the student to end the fight with some kind of submission (like a chokehold or an armlock). The advantage here is that this is a MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE and DECISIVE way for a smaller person to beat a larger and stronger attacker. Punches and kicks work best on attackers who are your size or smaller. But these Jiu Jitsu submissions work on EVERYBODY. With jiu jitsu, you can win a fight without ever throwing a punch.

So that’s the basic overall jiu jitsu self-defense strategy and it’s not just theory. This stuff is proven!

heel hook
Leg locks are an important aspect of modern jiu jitsu and a key focus in the advanced training at Bam Bam Jiu Jitsu Houston.

Reason #4: Jiu Jitsu Allows For Degrees of Force

This is a big legal and moral benefit for jiu jitsu. With striking based martial arts there is no “halfway”. For strikes to be effective they have to be thrown heard. But smashing someone’s face in isn’t the only alternative for someone who knows jiu jitsu.

Not all situations call for a knee to the face. Imagine your friend or coworker has had too much to drink at a party and starts to roughhouse a little bit. Are you going to just blast him in the face?

Of what if someone you kind of know is holding you in an uncomfortable way and you just want them to stop without hurting them. Jiu jitsu has an answer for that.

With jiu jitsu there are many options. You can take someone down and hold them there and just negotiate, you can put them in a submission lock, or you can go all the way and use strikes or the most lethal and maiming grappling moves.

So the point is that jiu jitsu covers the whole spectrum of force and so allows you to apply the appropriate level of force to any given situation.

Reason #5: Jiu Jitsu Enables Smaller and Weaker People To Beat Bigger and Stronger Attackers

Size always matters but it isn’t the only factor. Jiu jitsu is designed to use TECHNIQUE AND LEVERAGE to overcome size and strength – and for this reason, it is very beneficial for the smaller or weaker person.

So those are the self defense and personal protection benefits of learning jiu jitsu, but there are so many more benefits that people don’t often think about.

Jiu Jitsu Is An Amazing Full Body Workout

Jiu Jitsu is great for fitness! Everyone is looking for a GREAT way to get in shape and there are few options better than jiu jitsu. Your average one-hour jiu jitsu session includes warm-ups, drills, conditioning, and live-rolling. While every jiu jitsu class lets you set your own pace, and is VERY safe for beginners, all of the workouts add up to over 800-1100 calories per hour! This is not to mention the undeniable toning, strength gains, and balance gained simply by the athlete-making nature of jiu jitsu.

So training in BJJ is a great way to improve your physical conditioning. The reason why is because jiu jitsu training is more rigorous than many other martial arts, and this is due to the intensely physical nature of grappling. A typical class includes cardiovascular training, stretching, breathing work and a resistance workout.

So in a jiu jitsu class you are going to be working your whole body and improving your flexibility, coordination, core strength, as well as gaining muscle and losing fat.

The warm-up, the drills and the rolling (sparring) will literally leave you worn out and crawling off the mats at the end of class.

So if you are like most people and think running and biking is boring then you need to try jiu jitsu. Jiu jitsu is fun, engaging, and always interesting. Its kind of like CrossFit but with chokes (and you can’t burpee your way out of an armbar).

With Jiu Jitsu, you can get in get shape all while learning a skill that can potentially save your life or the life of your loved ones.

Jiu Jitsu Builds Mental Toughness

Former U.S. Navy Seal Jocko Willink has said “jiu jitsu is probably the number one activity I could recommend to someone to improve their lives overall.”

People often overlook the mental improvements of learning jiu jitsu.

The fact is that jiu jitsu builds mental toughness and this is another big reason why people train in this martial art.

Jiu jitsu teaches you to how face you fears.

It teaches you to keep going when you are tired.

It teaches you to reach deep down inside yourself and keep fighting when you are backed up against a wall.

In short, when you train in jiu jitsu you make a habit of FACING YOUR FEARS.

And that’s an important lesson. You can’t always back down in life either.

Jiu Jitsu Is A Great Stress Reliever

If you ever looked at pictures of people who have just got done training in jiu jitsu, you’re going to see them smiling and laughing and just having a great time. And that’s because jiu jitsu is an excellent way to alleviate stress.

All of your problems seem to disappear when you come into the school and or quickly forgotten when you start rolling. For this reason, a lot of people say jiu jitsu acts as therapy. This is a place where you can go and the only things that matter are learning a cool new move and trying it out on your partner.

There’s just nothing like coming in to roll on the mats after a long hard day’s work.

The jiu jitsu academy is your escape. It’s your sanctuary. Its where you can come and have some time completely to yourself where no one is going to be asking about your bad day at work. It’s like a little mini-vacation from your cubicle or screaming kids.

During the rolling and the drilling you can take all of your built up anger and frustration and let it all out on the mat. Roll hard. Have fun. Let it all out and laugh.

Jiu Jitsu Builds Your Self-Confidence

Another important benefit of jiu jutsu is that it’s a great way to build confidence. There’s something about going in and getting good at something as difficult as Jiu-Jitsu that really builds you up mentally. The reason why is because real confidence is based on having a history of attaining goals and acquiring little victories.

This is precisely what the jiu jitsu path entails. You’ve learned how to kind of overcome little struggles, you’ve conquered a series of goals and victories along the way and over time those things accumulate.

Growing in jiu jitsu helps you believe in yourself. You have a proven history of overcoming little struggles on the mat and that translates well over into life.

Jiu Jitsu Is Mentally Engaging

Another important benefit of jiu jitsu training is that it’s mentally engaging and the reason why is because you’re constantly learning new things. Jiu jitsu is a series of problems and solutions and the number of cool new moves you need to know never ends!

You start off learning a basic set of techniques and begin to apply those to a resisting partner. The resistance that your partner offers creates new situations and problems for you to solve which requires that you learn a new set of techniques. But then your partner learns counters to those and the process continues. And so the number of fun and helpful techniques you need to learn never ends.

At this point, jiu jitsu becomes like a game of chess. It’s your mind vs. theirs and the moves you make determine the outcome. You make a move and your opponent counters with something else. You counter his counter and the game continues. And just like in chess, the more experienced higher belts can think several moves ahead of the less experienced.

So it is this process of a mental “give and take” inspires you and makes the training very intellectually stimulating. There is a certain intellectual joy that comes from learning jiu jitsu. There is always something new, fun and engaging to learn, and it never gets boring.

Jiu Jitsu Is A Great Way To Make New Friends

Bam Bam Jiu Jitsu Houston - A Great Place To Meet New Friends
The jiu jitsu academy is a great place to meet new friends.

Another surprising plus to training at a jiu jitsu academy is the new friends you will make. There is something about rolling around on the mat wrestling with each other that brings people together.

Practitioners of jiu jitsu come from all walks of life; from white-collar professionals to blue collar workers, moms and business owners – jiu jitsu attracts people from all sorts of backgrounds.

Being on the same journey, you’ll spend days, months, and even years learning and growing with your jiu jitsu teammates.

And these relationships often go far beyond the mats, with people going to barbeques together, tournaments, and really getting to know each other outside the school.

Jiu Jitsu Builds Your Self-Esteem

Self-esteem has been defined simply as how much you like yourself. And what many people have found is that jiu jitsu training can really make you feel better about yourself and help you grow in self-esteem.

The reason why is because the training is both challenging and rewarding. The challenges come from the training, facing new partners, facing new hurdles and difficulties and everything else that is a natural part of this process.

The rewards can happen when you break through those barriers, become physically stronger, tougher, and more skilled. With dedication and focus, you’ll go from feeling awkward and silly to becoming a stronger and more skilled grappler.

You’ll feel empowered as the result of this process and you’ll be getting a new belt rank as a visible sign of your progress.

So the jiu jitsu journey is a series of tough struggles followed by success. When you rack up a lot of successes like this you will be confident. That’s why it is so important to have a series of successful experiences, a history of little victories over time to build your confidence.

This is why jiu jitsu is so good for self-esteem. We’re not talking about a mere feeling with no substance either, rather we are talking about an evidence-based self-esteem. Becoming skilled in something like jiu jitsu gives you a good reason to feel great about yourself. It gives you a safe environment in which you are presented with a continual series of tough struggles that you have to work through and for which you are rewarded for your efforts.

Think about how great you would feel about yourself from earning a black belt!

Jiu Jitsu Builds Your Mental Focus And Resolve

Also, jiu jitsu training can develop your mental focus and resolve. When you are training in jiu jitsu, you’re going to be faced with problems. Maybe some guy is holding you down, or you need to escape an armlock – whatever.

The point is that everybody experiences times when they get “caught” by something during training. But the good news is that jiu jitsu has solutions to all of those situations and when you realize that you get this burning desire to find out what that answer is. You can’t ignore it or avoid it, you have to deal with it.

This determination to find a solution to that whatever move someone keeps catching you in forces you to mentally buckle down and focus your efforts and have the resolve to learn the solution.

Jiu Jitsu Gives You More Energy

Everyone knows that working out can make you feel more energetic. Sitting around on Facebook or wathing TV too much can really make you feel drained.

Jiu jitsu training gives you an outlet where you can get a great workout and feel great fo for the rest of the day.

Jiu Jitsu Builds Your Courage

Roosevelt jiu jitsu poster
U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt wrote a book on jiu jitsu and said: “The art of jiu jitsu is worth more than all of our athletics combined.”

It should be pretty clear how training in jiu jitsu will give you more courage. Courage can be simply defined as the habit of facing your fears and acting anyway.

So when you come to train in jiu jitsu you may feel a little nervous about something.

Maybe you are nervous about grappling with someone you don’t know.

Maybe you are parternered with someone who is bigger than you are and honestly you feel a little intimidated or scared.

This is ok and it’s perfectly normal. But remember that it’s just training.

The jiu jitsu academy is a perfectly safe and controlled environment where you can practice facing fears like this.

After a while, facing your fears feels natural, it becomes a habit. And this is precisely what courage is.

This is why jiu jitsu is a great way to build your courage. And this courage will transfer over into your daily life as well.

Jiu Jitsu Makes People Happier

Another surprising aspect of jiu jitsu is that it’s been shown to actually make you happier.
That may sound weird and perhaps unusual at first. But you should consider what Dr. David Ley has said in Psychology Today. He is actually a student of jiu jitsu and a psychologist and has shown that grappling with people, that is, being in close proximity with other human beings actually causes us to release a hormone called oxytocin. This increases our happiness, it increases our sense of satisfaction with life and so he concluded that jiu-jitsu actually makes us happier in this way.

Jiu Jitsu Is A Ton Of Fun

Training In Jiu Jitsu Is A Ton Of Fun! Jiu jitsu classes always send you home feeling better, even when you’re sore from the intense workout! What’s amazing about jujitsu is that it combines a runner’s high with the contemplative nature of a chess game. Why? Because jiu jitsu is like a strategy puzzle in which you need to stay a few steps ahead of your opponent. Whether you are someone who simply enjoys physical activity for its own sake or LOVE mental stimulation and growth, Jiu jitsu is for YOU.

Actually, surveys have shown that the number one reason why people train and continue in jiu jitsu is because it’s so much darn fun.

And this is really important because the more fun activity is the more likely it is you’re going to do it.

Unlike elliptical machines or jogging on the treadmill and things of that sort, jiu jitsu is the kind of activity that is fun and engaging and therefore, the more you’re going to want to do it.

And the more you do jiu jitsu, the more you’re going to get all those other benefits too.

Jiu Jitsu Is Great For Women

jiu jitsu woman
Jiu Jitsu is very empowering for women because its strategy is tailored to the helping smaller people defeat larger attackers.

Jiu Jitsu is very empowering for women because its strategy is tailored to the helping smaller people defeat larger attackers. Women are typically smaller than men and when a man attacks a woman his goal is usually to get her on the ground.

But a woman who knows jiu jitsu is perfectly prepared for this common situation.

Not only is jiu jitsu geared towards using leverage to help smaller people defeat larger attackers, but as we have been saying jiu jitsu is a ground-based martial art. That means any male attacker who gets a female jiu jitsu expert on the ground will very likely find himself in trouble. He’s like a bug that has fallen into the black widow’s web.

Every woman deserves to be the hard-core, battle-ready person that she already is in every other aspect of her life! There is NO better way for a woman to protect herself and her children than jiu jitsu.

Moreover, jiu jitsu students are the most helpful and generous people in the world and will never ask you to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable. Your instructor and fellow students will guide you and care for you as a member of their own family.
