Let me tell you a secret. Bullies are scared. They are cowards who make themselves feel big by picking on others. If they had confidence they’d channel it into healthy activities like martial arts. Spoiler alert, they don’t!
Level 1 Bullying is the test. It’s the time when the bully checks the other kids to see who will be a victim and who will stand up for themselves. If the one being bullied is passive, the attacks continue. If they respond with swift confidence and equal force, they will be passed over for an easier target.
Level 1 Bullying is less obvious abuse. It starts with teasing and mocking. Maybe just making fun of a fellow student and seeing if there is a response. This behavior escalates into greater levels of aggression. It’s important to be able to recognize it and not write it off as kids being kids.
When a confident kid shuts down Level 1 Bullying, they refuse to be a victim any longer.
Martial arts helps kids be confident. It makes them feel decisive and comfortable. They learn self-discipline and how to spot a bully.
This process is learned through achievement. As kids reach milestones they also gain a sense of security. The first time a secure confident kid encounters a bully, they will know what to do. If the bully approaches them with mean words, the kid will use words back. If a bully pushes, a confident kid will push back. Even though it’s frowned upon in schools, matching force with equal force is a learned skill.
